Top 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. The UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in the year 1972, recognized various sites of cultural and natural importance in the world. After an increase of nine sites in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list, India now has 38 World Heritage Sites and is the 6th largest in the series of these World Heritage Sites. Currently, 30 UNESCO recognized cultural sites, 7 natural sites, and 1 mixed site in India.
1.Taj Mahal,(Agra):
It is one of the seven wonders of the world, the Mughal architecture built from Sangmarwar, It Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz. It is located in Agra city on the banks of river Yamuna. It’s built-in 1653 by Shah Jahan. From the time he was making it, his intention to make the world’s most beautiful wonder.
Today it is the world’s most outstanding monument in Mughal architecture. Today it is called the jewel of Mughal architecture. It is a monument that is most recognized worldwide in Indian heritage sites.
2.Ajanta Caves,(Maharashtra):
It is famous for the monuments of Buddhist rock-cut caves. One of the World Heritage Sites of India, Ajanta Caves dates to around 650 BCE and includes 31 of the rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments, the most beautiful works of painting and sculpture. These caves have been constructed in two different stages.
The first construction dates back to the patronage of the Satavahana dynasty (230BCE-220CE). The second building built during the reign of Emperor Harishena of the Vakataka dynasty. Generally, the style of Ajanta architecture has progressed in the history of Indian architecture. These include mainly carvings and sculptures related to the life of Buddha, one can say that this is the beginning of Indian classical art.
3.Ellora Caves,(Maharashtra):
These caves are famous as Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu temples and monasteries. Ellora caves are a famous world heritage site in India and also a historical archaeological site, which is located about 29 km northwest of Aurangabad, Maharashtra. These caves are quite popular for their special architecture of Indian rock-cut.
Temples and caves built around 600 to 1000 BCE, which help to understand the life of the people of that time. The presence of temples and idols of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religions shows the tolerance of people towards various religions in ancient world history.
4.Bodh Gaya,(Bihar):
Bodhgaya is 96 kilometers from Patna(Bihar), it is an Indian heritage site recognized by UNESCO. It is an important center of religious places famous for Buddhists. Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree and became Gautama Buddha.
The famous Mahabodhi Temple found in the reign of Emperor Ashoka in about 250 BCE. It is one of the best of ancient Buddhist architecture. Currently, Bodhgaya is known as the holiest pilgrimage site for Buddhists.
5.Kaziranga Wild Life Sanctuary,(Assam):
Famous as the world’s 2/3 rd Great One-Horned Rhinoceros, high density of elephants, tigers, wild water buffalo, and recognized bird territory. Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for one-horned rhinoceros and includes untouched natural areas of India.
The World Heritage Site in India was a project started by Lord Curzon, the park is located in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra River in Assam and mainly consists of dense grasslands, and forests. Along with this, many lakes also flow. Kaziranga has about 15 endangered species, of which rhinos are the most endangered.
6.Sundarbans National Park,(West Bengal):
The Royal Bengal Tigers are the most famous among the creatures found in this area, this National Park is a famous tiger reserve and biosphere located in West Bengal, India. Sunderban located in the Bay of Bengal on the Sundarban deltas of the Ganges River. It is the largest dense mangrove forest reserve in India.
It is the Royal Bengal Tiger, a variety of animal species such as spotted deer, Gangetic dolphins, and other mammal and amphibian species. The rare saltwater crocodile remains another unique attraction of this biosphere reserve. This place has the highest population of tigers in India. It is for this reason that it is one of the most famous Indian heritage sites.
